Railway trains which used steam to drive their engines were common at one point in time, up to the twentieth century. It was important to have the train replenished with water even while it was in motion, since water was needed to create the required steam, but the authorities would not necessarily want the trains to stop during the process. In order to accomplish this feat, it was necessary for a railroad track pan to be made available for use by these trains.
