HSV-1: What exactly is This Virus?

HSV-1 or Herpes Simplex Virus 1 certainly does not sound like anything pleasant. Yet, it is not as bad as it might sound either. Even though it is a type of herpes virus, it is not the one that causes genital herpes. That one is called HSV-2.

No, HSV-1 is much more common and harmless than its name might suggest. HSV-1 is the virus that causes recurring cold sores, or "fever blisters," around the mouth.

Generally speaking, the virus is not a health risk to people with a normal immune system
